From Timothy Olanrewaju, Maiduguri
Military troops have arrested five members of a private escort team over an unlawful shooting that resulted in the killing of a teenage girl in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The incident occurred when the five men, who were on the escort team of a local government chairman to a wedding ceremony in the city over the weekend, started shooting.
The spokesman of the Joint Task Force, Northeastern Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), Lt Col Sani Uba, who confirmed the incident, said the unauthorised discharge of firearms that killed a 14-year-old girl occurred in Ngomari, a sprawling community in Maiduguri.
“In the Ngomari general area, troops of Operation Hadin Kai, in conjunction with the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), have arrested five suspects linked to the unlawful use of firearms during a social event.
“The incident occurred at about 2:00 p.m. (last Saturday) when vigilantes—later identified as members of an escort team attached to the Chairman of a Local Government Area—engaged in sporadic firing into the air during a wedding celebration,” he disclosed.
He said troops acted swiftly and arrested the five suspects. He identified them as Muhammad Husaini (28), Abba Jiddu (25), Abba Kolo Mohammed (20), Ali Adam (20), and Nura Mohammed (18).
He explained that the suspects are in military custody and will be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and prosecution in accordance with extant laws.
