Three police officers from the Area F of the Lagos State Police Command have been arrested for allegedly extorting N100,000 from a Chinese expatriate along the Sheraton-Opebi link road area.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when the officers, who were conducting a stop-and-search operation, flagged down the foreigner and demanded his documents, including a green card. Although the expatriate showed the documents on his phone, the officers insisted on seeing the original copies.

According to rights activist Lameed Adekunle, after a series of discussions, the officers forced the expatriate to transfer N100,000 into a Point Of Sale account. Adekunle explained that the expatriate, who was on his way to an urgent meeting, complied as he did not want to be late.

The matter became public when the expatriate, who works with a prominent construction company, shared his experience with his Nigerian colleagues. His co-workers escalated the issue, leading to an investigation by the police.

Adewale Ojo of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights confirmed that the police officers were identified and subsequently arrested and detained. Ojo also mentioned that the officers had been summoned to the provost’s office in Ikeja, where they were held, and were ordered to refund the N100,000 to the expatriate.

A receipt of the transfer, showing both the expatriate’s and the recipient’s details, was also obtained. The police officers are expected to refund the amount on Monday.

The Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, could not be reached for comment as calls and text messages went unanswered.

This incident follows a similar case reported in October 2024, when officers from the Area C Police Command in Surulere allegedly extorted N1 million from three members of the National Youth Service Corps.
