Residents of Tudun Tagarji, Kano State, were left in shock on Saturday after the discovery of a newborn baby abandoned in a carton near a drainage in the Kaura area.
Commander Rabiu Sulaiman, leader of the Operation Zaman Lafiya vigilante group, disclosed the incident in a statement on Sunday. He explained that his team made the tragic discovery during a routine patrol around 2 a.m.
“While patrolling, we noticed a suspicious carton discarded near a pit. Unsure of its contents, I instructed my team to check it. To our shock, we found a lifeless newborn inside,” Sulaiman recounted.
Following the discovery, the vigilantes informed community leaders and later reported the case to the police.
“By morning, we invited the ward head and other community members to witness the situation before taking the baby to the police station,” he added.
The authorities directed them to a hospital, where doctors confirmed the baby’s death. The vigilante team then conducted burial rites in accordance with Islamic customs.
Call for Community Vigilance and Parental Guidance
Sulaiman urged local vigilante groups to remain proactive in protecting their communities and emphasized the need for parents to guide their children, particularly young women, to prevent unwanted pregnancies.
“Unwanted pregnancies contradict Islamic teachings. Parents must monitor their children’s activities and offer proper guidance,” he stated.
