The Director-General of the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), Samson Duna, has reaffirmed his commitment to reducing building collapses in Nigeria while ensuring accessible and affordable housing.
Speaking during a thanksgiving service at ECWA Central Area, Abuja, on Sunday, Duna expressed gratitude for his reappointment by President Bola Tinubu. He outlined his vision for the next four years, focusing on infrastructure durability, enhanced service delivery, and innovative research.
Duna, first appointed in 2020 and reappointed in November 2024, emphasized the importance of advancing research to improve construction standards. He pledged to enhance the quality of building materials by leveraging state-of-the-art laboratory technology.
Additionally, he highlighted plans to address housing funding challenges and implement practical research projects aimed at transforming Nigeria’s construction industry. Staff welfare, manpower development, and community-benefiting research remain top priorities under his leadership.
Commendations for Leadership and Innovation
The Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Mr. Geoffrey Nnaji, praised Duna for his outstanding leadership, describing his reappointment as a strategic decision by the president to place “a round peg in a round hole.” He noted that Duna’s dedication and competence had earned him trust across sectors.
NBRRI’s Director of Consultancy and Extension Services, Mr. Daniel Makava, also lauded Duna’s contributions, particularly his efforts in modernizing construction material testing through advanced laboratory equipment. He credited Duna for pioneering research initiatives such as converting plastic waste into road materials, which have enhanced sustainability in Nigeria’s construction sector.
“The institute has also strengthened collaborations with academic institutions, providing internship and joint research opportunities,” Makava added.
Call for Faith and Enduring Leadership
During the service, the host pastor, Rev. Ogidi Dickson, encouraged the congregation to seek God beyond their comfort zones.
“Trust in God’s enduring mercy and guidance, even in times of uncertainty. Seek Him with your whole heart, and He will see you through life’s storms,” he said.
The event was attended by notable dignitaries, including Sen. Anthony Yaro (Gombe South) and Rep. Obed Shehu (Kaltungo, Shongom Constituency), among others.
