In line with the Lagos State Government’s policy on pay as you go, the State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu has paid over N70bn to 20,956 retirees across all categories of civil servants in the last five years.

The State Head of Service, Bode Agoro made this known on Wednesday during a press briefing to mark the second year of the second term in office of Governor Sanwo-Olu and Dr Obafemi Hamzat administration at Alausa, Ikeja.

Agoro noted that over N15bn was paid to 6,024 by the Governor in 2024 to clear the pension arrears.

Agoro said, “Mr Governor has demonstrated unwavering commitment to clearing pension arrears. In year 2024, a total of N15,108,672,919.19 was paid to 6,024 retirees in the Mainstream, Local Government, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) and other State Government parastatals.

“From May 2019, when the current administration began, until December 2024, a cumulative sum of N70,198,214,414.11 had been paid to 20,956 retirees across all categories mentioned above.

“The settlement of these pension arrears is a monumental achievement in the Lagos State Public Service, reflecting Mr Governor’s steadfast dedication to addressing the challenges faced by retirees in the State.”

He went further, “Additionally, Lagos State Pension Commission, LASPEC on behalf of the State Government, concluded sensitization programmes for Public Servants in all the five Divisions of the State. These programmes, held in October and December 2024, supported Public Servants to provide updated information for processing of their retirement benefits and ensured their records are current with their respective PFAs for seamless pension payment.”

Earlier, the Head of Service disclosed that in line with the Lagos State Public Procurement Agency digitization policy, LSPPA issued 4,050 Award Letters to Service Providers between May 2024 and April 2025.

He advised, “Let me use this forum to enjoin all employees of the State Government, particularly those involved in the procurement process flow, to continue to develop and improve their skills and knowledge in Information Communication Technology, as the Agency is set to embark on the total digititalization of its procurement process.

“This aimed to further facilitate the State Government’s policy on ease of doing business with the State Government, thereby enhancing good governance and preventing corruption in public procurement in the State.”

Agoro added, “A key priority of the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, as articulated in the THEMES+ Agenda, is to build a more inclusive and equitable society. This includes addressing the needs of retirees and ensuring smooth service delivery in the pension sector.

“A significant milestone in this commitment was achieved during the 103rd Retirement Bond Certificate Presentation Ceremony in 2024, where the Governor presented over N3.1 billion to 1,013 retirees as their accrued pension rights.

“In line with the Pension Reform Law of 2007, the Lagos State Government has also worked to integrate various Pension Departments under the Lagos State Pension Commission. These Departments, previously operating under the Defined Benefits Scheme, are now consolidated and referred to as the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD), further streamlining pension management in the State.”
