From Isaac Anumihe, Abuja
Following the recent killings in Jos, the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, Dr Olusola Odumosu, has ordered the deployment of 4,000 personnel across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to enforce law and order and ensure a peaceful celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ by Christian faithful.
In a statement, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of NSCDC, Monica Ojobi, said the deployment is in response to the need to ensure the security of the lives and property of FCT residents, as well as critical national assets and infrastructure (CNAI) in the city and its environs before, during and after the Easter season.
She said the deployment of officers and personnel cuts across specialised departments and units such as the Arms Squad, Female Strike Force, Crack Squad, Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE) Counter-Terrorism Unit, and Agro-Rangers.
In addition, there is a massive deployment to vulnerable locations and soft targets such as churches, shopping malls, recreational centres, markets, hospitals, motor parks, amusement parks and areas housing CNAI.
According to her, in a move to ensure proactiveness and prevent emergencies or unforeseen circumstances, operatives of the undercover unit have already been deployed for covert operations and surveillance to gather intelligence that will enable the corps to nip crimes in the bud.
Black spots, such as uncompleted buildings that harbour criminals, are also being monitored to avert security breaches.
She noted that Odumosu also gave marching orders to all area commanders and divisional officers to ensure their respective area councils remain secure and their presence is felt to prevent security lapses.
Ojobi explained that the commandant charged all personnel to be disciplined, maintain good conduct and work in synergy with other security agencies. He advised them to adhere strictly to the rules of engagement and avoid harassment and intimidation of citizens, as well as accidental discharge.
He also urged residents of the FCT to remain vigilant as they celebrate, advising them to watch out for suspicious individuals, unusual dressing, unattended bags, metallic objects and items placed in unusual locations to avoid falling victim to terrorist attacks.
The commandant disclosed that the corps, in collaboration with other security agencies, has heightened security across the FCT and its environs to outsmart individuals with ulterior motives.
Odumosu also urged residents to report any suspicious movement, individuals or groups to the nearest security agency.
“We are ready, as always, to ensure a peaceful celebration. You have a part to play too by being proactive, vigilant and ready to cooperate with law enforcement agencies for our collective good,” the commandant said.
He warned criminals and vandals to stay away from CNAI, stating that NSCDC covert operatives and patrol teams are strategically positioned across the city and will not hesitate to bring offenders to justice.
The commandant urged Christian faithful to imbibe love, sacrifice, tolerance and patience, which are the essence of the season, noting that if these values are practised, the country will be better for it.
He wished all Christians a happy Easter celebration.
