The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and Abuja is currently facing a leadership crisis due to allegations of tenure elongation. The controversy arose when Reverend Joseph Hayab declared himself the newly elected Chairman, asserting that the tenure of the incumbent leadership, led by Reverend Yakubu Pam, had expired over two years ago.
In response, the Pam-led faction dismissed Hayab’s claims, labeling the election as fraudulent and illegal. They argue that the National Executive Council (NEC) of Northern CAN had extended Pam’s leadership to allow for the completion of ongoing bylaw reviews, emphasizing that any leadership transition must adhere to due process.
Despite facing criticism over this alleged tenure elongation, the Pam-led Northern CAN has vowed to ignore detractors, maintaining that their continued leadership is legitimate and in the association’s best interest.
This internal dispute has deepened divisions within Northern CAN, with both factions standing firm in their positions, raising concerns about the association’s stability and unity.
