Four people lost their lives, and nine others were injured in an accident along the Alapako area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Sunday night. According to the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, the crash occurred when a Toyota Hiace bus, traveling from Ibadan toward Lagos, suffered a punctured left rear tire due to a badly maintained section of the road. The sudden loss of control caused the bus to somersault off the road.
An eyewitness account revealed that the vehicle, registered FKJ 570 YE, was moving when the puncture happened. The impact of the crash claimed the lives of four people, including the driver, while nine passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries. The severely damaged bus was promptly removed, and the injured were taken to Victory Hospital in Ogere for treatment. The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the FOS Mortuary in Ipara for autopsy as the police continue their investigation.
The Ogun State Police Command urged all motorists to ensure proper vehicle maintenance and strictly adhere to traffic safety regulations to prevent similar accidents in the future. They also noted that a police presence was visible at the scene, helping with traffic control and documentation.
This incident comes just 48 hours after another tragic accident on the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway, where 16 people were burnt to death, and a multi-vehicle collision on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that left three people dead and 14 injured.
