The Nigerian Navy is establishing a Special Operations Command in Makurdi, Benue State, a move aimed at bolstering security in the Middle Belt region. Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, has explained that this strategic initiative is designed to improve the Navy’s capacity to respond to evolving security challenges, particularly those requiring land-based operations.
Addressing Security Concerns in Benue
Benue State, known as Nigeria’s food basket, has faced significant security challenges in recent years, including clashes between farmers and herders, banditry, and other forms of violence. These issues have not only claimed lives and displaced communities but have also threatened the state’s agricultural productivity and overall economic stability. Governor Hyacinth Alia has described the threats to lives and farmlands as a national crisis with direct implications for food security.
Recognizing the urgent need for enhanced security measures, the Federal Government has approved the establishment of the Special Operations Command in Makurdi. This decision reflects a commitment to tackling insecurity and ensuring the safety and well-being of the people of Benue State.
The Navy’s Total Spectrum Maritime Strategy
Vice Admiral Ogalla has emphasized that the establishment of the Special Operations Command aligns with the Navy’s Total Spectrum Maritime Strategy. This strategy extends the Navy’s responsibilities beyond coastal waters to inland waterways and land-based support. The command will coordinate training for operatives engaged in land operations, addressing limitations in providing personnel adequately trained for such duties due to the Navy’s primarily maritime focus.
The Special Operations Command will be situated on the North Bank of the River Benue and will integrate various elite naval units, including the Special Boat Service (SBS), Navy Marines, and Blue Sea Operations teams. These units will work alongside the Army, Air Force, and other security agencies to address the region’s security challenges. The command will operate seamlessly across land, sea, and air, enhancing military reach throughout the nation. The Navy Base in Lake Chad and the Navy Base in Shagunu will also be part of this command.
A Collaborative Approach to Security
The establishment of the Special Operations Command in Makurdi underscores the importance of a collaborative approach to security. Vice Admiral Ogalla has called for sustained cooperation among all security agencies and community leaders. Governor Alia has pledged full logistical support to fast-track the command’s activation and has assured the Navy of continued partnership, including efforts to improve site accessibility and foster long-term peacebuilding.
By working together, the Nigerian Navy, the Benue State government, and other stakeholders can create a safer and more secure environment for the people of Benue State, fostering economic development and improving the quality of life for all residents.
