A 500 level student of Covenant University (CU), Ota, Ogun State, Jesutunmise Emmanuel, has died while playing football.
Jesutunmise, a Building Technology student, died in the school clinic after he was rushed from the football field when he developed a breathing problem.
His death in the university clinic is the third involving students of the institution.
His death is already generating ripples on campus as his colleagues have questioned the lack of oxygen in the school’s clinic.
His colleagues, in a post online, alleged he died at the medical centre because the university didn’t have oxygen.
The post read: “Apparently, they were playing the Chancellor’s Cup, a match between computer engineering and building technology. He asked for an early sub as he was feeling weak and short of breath.
“At half time, his situation got worse. They rushed him to the medical centre where the doctor on duty allegedly said he just needed air. But minutes later, the doctor said he had stopped breathing.
“Apparently, they didn’t use oxygen or nebuliser because the N1.9 million per session school housing over 11,000 students had nothing in their arsenal.”
The students alleged that it took three hours after the incident before Jesutunmise’s parents were informed of his death by the university management.
The students recalled that in June 2025, a 200 level engineering student, Mordi Nwese Daniel, was struck by lightning on the same football pitch.
According to the students, in April 2017, a 500 level Building Tech student hit his head in the pool. Students managed to resuscitate and rushed him to the school clinic, which they said lacked oxygen and defibrillator.
When Daily Sun called the Public Relations Officer of the university, Chichi Ononiwu, she picked the call and cut her lines as the Correspondent introduced himself as a journalist and the reason for the call.
The reporter called her four times and also sent WhatsApp messages to her seeking the university management’s reaction to Jesutunmise’s death but she didn’t respond.
