Fresh cracks have emerged within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as a new faction surfaced on Tuesday, openly rejecting the leadership of David Mark and distancing itself from rival camps in the party’s escalating power struggle.
The group, led by Norman Obinna, claims to represent the party’s legitimate National Executive Committee and says its emergence followed an emergency meeting held on April 7. From the outset, the faction took a hard line against opposing blocs.
“Ignorance is not only a disease, but also a crime.
“We have watched with amusement how a few Nigerians with no real understanding of issues concerning our party, the ADC, have jumped in with emotions devoid of reasoning and understanding,” it said.
Positioning itself firmly, the group backed the electoral umpire’s recent intervention.
“We therefore wish to correct a lot of misinformation out there in the public domain. But before doing this, we want to say we are in total support of INEC’s position on this matter and commend them on their bravery in finally doing what is right.”
The faction declared that it has formally severed ties with Mark’s coalition, insisting that any decisions taken under that leadership carry no weight within the party.
It also dismissed claims surrounding Nafiu Bala’s role, stating he never held the position attributed to him, while reaffirming the membership of Dumebi Kachikwu.
According to Obinna, the battle for control is being driven by political opportunism rather than party ideals.
“The ADC is also not for sale,” Obinna stated.
He further accused the coalition group of lacking democratic legitimacy.
“No democratic credentials and are only interested in the power grab, as evidenced by the way and manner in which they attempted to hijack our party and throw out the original members.”
The faction said it has appointed interim leaders to steer party affairs pending a national convention, while urging the Independent National Electoral Commission to formally recognise its leadership “to accord them the necessary recognitions and support in order to save the African Democratic Congress from total collapse.”
The latest development adds another layer to the ADC’s leadership crisis, which intensified after INEC withdrew recognition of the Mark-led structure following conflicting court orders and legal claims, leaving the party increasingly fragmented ahead of future political alignments.
