President Bola Tinubu arrives Ethiopia to attend the 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa. The summit is scheduled to take place from February 14 to 18, 2025.

Tinubu was welcomed at the airport by Ethiopian Deputy Chief of Protocol, Eshetu Legesse, alongside Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and the Charge d’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy in Ethiopia, Nasir Aminu.

Nigeria Secures Key Diplomatic Wins

Following his arrival, Tinubu was briefed by Foreign Minister Tuggar on Nigeria’s diplomatic achievements at the AU, including:

  • The re-election of Bankole Adeoye as African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security.
  • Nigeria retaining its seat on the AU Peace and Security Council, reaffirming its leadership in regional peace efforts.

Among those present at the briefing were Ministers Wale Edun (Finance), Abubakar Badaru (Defence), Jumoke Oduwole (Trade and Investment), Festus Keyamo (Aviation), Muhammed Idris (Information and National Orientation), Balarabe Lawal (Environment), and Doris Uzoka-Anite (State for Finance).

Also in attendance were Mohammed Mohammed (Director-General, National Intelligence Agency) and Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla (Chief of Naval Staff).

AU Summit: Key Agendas for Tinubu

This year’s AU summit is themed “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations”, focusing on reparatory justice and racial healing.

During the event, Tinubu will:

  • Deliver a speech at the African Union Peace and Security Council, discussing security challenges, including the crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
  • Participate in key meetings on health financing, the establishment of an Africa Credit Rating Agency, and climate change initiatives.

According to the Presidency, Tinubu will return to Abuja on Monday, February 17 after the summit.
