A remarkable 12-year-old Nigerian innovator, Joshua Obadin, has won one of the ten prestigious prizes at the IDEASforEARS Children’s Invention Contest, organized by hearing implant company MED-EL. Obadin, based in Lagos, earned an all-expenses-paid trip to Austria for his creative invention, a sleepwear cover designed specifically for his friend, Master Mikel, who uses a cochlear implant.

Obadin explained his inspiration for the invention, saying, “Mikel can’t hear without his device, and when he removes it at bedtime, everything goes silent—even if there’s danger. He can’t even hear crickets chirping, which makes me worried. I wanted to create something to help keep him safe.” His idea was born out of compassion for his friend and his desire to protect him when he couldn’t hear. He added, “Knowing my idea could help others too makes me happy.”

The contest organizers praised Obadin’s invention, recognizing it for its practicality, innovation, and the positive impact it could have on individuals with hearing challenges. The IDEASforEARS 2025 contest encouraged children aged six to 12 from across the globe to develop inventions that could improve the lives of those with hearing loss. This year, the contest received 355 submissions from 24 countries, including innovations such as wearable devices and solar-powered hearing aids.

Geoffrey Ball, the Head Judge of IDEASforEARS, commended the children’s ingenuity, calling them “problem-solvers who see possibilities rather than limits.” He emphasized that each submission reflected a child’s ability to turn challenges into solutions with imagination, curiosity, and compassion.

Obadin’s win will enable him to travel to Innsbruck, Austria, in June with a parent to participate in workshops and innovation tours, where he will meet other young inventors from around the world. Other winners come from diverse countries, including China, Brazil, the United States, Argentina, Colombia, Italy, Spain, Germany, and Poland.

Since its inception in 2017, the IDEASforEARS contest has garnered over 1,700 submissions from 45 countries, highlighting the creativity of young minds in addressing hearing-related challenges. MED-EL, a leader in implantable hearing solutions, continues to pioneer technologies to enhance the lives of people with hearing impairments in more than 137 countries.

Joshua Obadin’s achievement is a testament to the power of youthful innovation and the potential for young people to make a global impact with their ideas.
