Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso has expressed confidence in Victor Boniface’s ability to fight for his starting spot despite nearly making a high-profile move to Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr in January. The Nigerian striker was poised to join the Saudi club on a lucrative €15m-per-season contract, but the deal collapsed, with Al Nassr ultimately securing Aston Villa’s Jhon Durán for a €77m transfer instead.
Despite the transfer saga, Boniface appears to have refocused on his duties at Leverkusen. After recovering from a thigh injury, the 23-year-old forward has returned to the pitch, featuring in the last three matches and scoring two goals. His minutes have gradually increased, notably playing 75 minutes in a goalless draw against Wolfsburg on Saturday. Alonso has reiterated his belief in Boniface’s resilience and ability to compete for a starting place against in-form striker Patrik Schick, who has been exceptional during Boniface’s absence, scoring 14 goals.
Alonso is confident that Boniface’s mindset is not negatively affected by the failed transfer. The Spanish manager explained that they had a conversation before the transfer window, with Boniface open to a move but ultimately content to remain at Leverkusen. Alonso is confident that Boniface will channel his energy positively and fight for his place in the team.
Before the injury, Boniface had an impressive start to the season, scoring six goals and providing one assist in his first 10 Bundesliga appearances. His return has been marked by important contributions, including a goal against Hoffenheim and a crucial strike in a cup win against Koln.
Boniface’s contract extension until 2029 and his €20m transfer from Union Saint-Gilloise reflect the club’s faith in his potential. His debut season at Leverkusen was nothing short of spectacular, with 21 goals and 10 assists across 34 appearances, helping the club secure a historic Bundesliga and German Cup double.
As Leverkusen push for more silverware, Boniface’s ability to adapt after the transfer uncertainty will be key to their success. His competition with Schick will likely keep the pressure high in the forward positions, ensuring both players strive to make their mark.
