Nyesom Wike, former governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, may be preparing to leave the Peoples Democratic Party and move to APC.
For months, political observers have closely watched Wike’s relationship with the PDPyTensions within the opposition party have persisted since the 2023 general elections. Consequently, speculation about his future political direction has continued to grow.
Although the minister has not officially announced a defection, several recent developments have fueled the conversation. Many analysts now believe his next political move could reshape alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
Strained Relationship with the PDP
Wike remains one of the most influential political figures in southern Nigeria. However, his relationship with the Peoples Democratic Party has experienced visible strain in recent years.
The disagreement first became pronounced during the party’s internal crisis before the 2023 elections. At that time, Wike led a group of governors who demanded greater balance within the party’s leadership structure. When those demands failed, tensions deepened.
Subsequently, Wike openly challenged some decisions taken by the party hierarchy. His political stance also placed him at odds with certain PDP leaders. As a result, the once strong alliance between the former governor and the party leadership gradually weakened.
Appointment Under Tinubu’s Administration
Another factor intensifying speculation is Wike’s role in the federal government. Despite remaining a PDP member, he accepted an appointment from Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria’s president and a leading figure in the All Progressives Congress.
In August 2023, President Tinubu appointed Wike as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The decision surprised many observers. Traditionally, such high-level appointments come from members of the ruling party.
However, Tinubu described the appointment as a recognition of competence and administrative experience. Since assuming office, Wike has launched several infrastructure and urban renewal projects across Abuja.
Consequently, his working relationship with the APC-led federal government has grown stronger. This development has further fueled speculation about a possible political realignment.
Strategic Calculations Ahead of 2027
Political strategists now believe that Wike’s next move could be influenced by preparations for the 2027 general elections. Aligning with the ruling party could strengthen his political leverage at the national level.
Moreover, joining the All Progressives Congress might allow him to consolidate influence within federal structures. Such a move could also reshape the political balance in Rivers State and across the South-South region.
Nevertheless, supporters within the Peoples Democratic Party continue to urge him to remain in the party. They argue that his leadership and grassroots support remain vital to the PDP’s future.
What the Move Could Mean
If Nyesom Wike eventually defects, the political consequences could be significant. His influence stretches across multiple political blocs and networks. Therefore, any formal shift may trigger realignments among his loyal supporters.
Furthermore, it could weaken the PDP’s strength in some areas while strengthening the APC’s reach in the South-South. Political analysts believe the coming months will reveal whether the speculation turns into a formal declaration.
For now, Wike remains officially a member of the Peoples Democratic Party. However, the growing signs of political recalculation suggest that Nigeria’s political landscape may soon witness another major shift.
