The Bayer Leverkusen striker is optimistic that his current performances with the German champions will see him return to the Nigeria national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, reports PUNCH Sports Extra.

Tella scored his first UEFA Champions League goal and third of the season against Sparta Prague on Wednesday to seal Leverkusen’s 2-0 victory.

The 25-year-old smashed the rebound into an empty net after Bindal made a good save on Alejandro Grimaldo’s direct free kick from outside the penalty area.

His contribution was crucial in helping the team secure a top-eight spot in the Champions League and avoid an early elimination in the playoffs.

The Nigerian has made 25 appearances in all competitions for the club this season and seems to be enjoying himself.

“I could have scored more goals but I’m happy that the team won,” he told Oma Akatugba, a Nigerian journalist based in Germany.

“Of course, I’ve always been an attacking player. I haven’t played much before but I had to be patient and wait for my timing and luckily I was able to take advantage of the opportunity.

“I think the coach is happy and he’s becoming more and more demanding, which makes me happy and motivates me to be a better player. I think everything is going in the right direction and I want to keep going,” he said when asked about the possibility of returning to the Super Eagles after he last plays for the national team in 2023.

“I can’t say. I have to be nominated based on my merits. I have to work hard. If the coach thinks my efforts are enough, I will gladly accept the invitation and if not, I will continue to work hard.

“It’s an honor to play for my country. I will give 100% at every opportunity and continue to do the right thing at the club to be recognized in my country.”

Terra’s Super Eagles debut first game came in November 2023, a 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in a 2026 World Cup qualifier. Since then, the Leverkusen-born striker has not got a chance to represent his country.
