Omoyele Sowore, an activist and former presidential candidate, has arrived at the Federal High Court in Abuja for his arraignment on remarks he made on social media calling Egbetokun an “illegal IG.”
According to PUNCH, Sowore is scheduled to appear before Federal High Court Justice Liman in Abuja today (Wednesday).
According to reports, the activist is charged with three cybercrime-related offenses under the 2015 Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, ETC) Act, as revised in 2024.
Egbetokun accused Sowore of purposefully and deliberately sending tweets through his verified Twitter account, referring to the IG as “illegal IGP Kayode Egbetokun,” according to the charges, which were filed in a complaint with the suit number FCH/ABJ/23/25.
According to the police, Sowore’s statements were intended to incite unrest and weaken police authority, and these publications were fraudulent and intended to disrupt law and order.
Marshall Abubakar, the head of his legal team, acknowledged that the charges will be tried in court.
However, political activist Deji Adeyanju said the charges are an abuse of the judicial system and promised a robust defense in court.
Remember how Sowore was detained on Monday after he refused to comply with the police’s bail requirements after being accused of cyberstalking and impeding public officials?
The accusations are part of a continuing conflict between Sowore and Nigerian authorities, especially following a widely shared video he uploaded in December alleging police extortion at a Lagos checkpoint.
