Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, marked his swearing-in on Monday with a significant act of clemency, granting freedom to eight inmates and reducing sentences for 35 others. The decision, based on recommendations from the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, aligns with his administration’s broader judicial reform agenda.

Breakdown of Clemency Measures

  • Eight convicts were granted immediate release.
  • Fifteen death row inmates had their sentences commuted to prison terms.
  • Twenty prisoners serving life sentences received reduced jail terms.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ebenezer Adeniyan, confirmed the move in a statement titled “Inauguration: Gov Aiyedatiwa Extends Mercy to 43 Prisoners.”

Commitment to Justice Reform

Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, emphasized that the governor’s decision reflects his belief in rehabilitation and second chances. “It is His Excellency’s responsibility to ensure that our justice system reflects mercy and humanity,” Ajulo said.

Aiyedatiwa has prioritized judicial reforms throughout his tenure. In October 2024, he appointed six new judges to strengthen the state’s legal system, marking the second large-scale judicial appointment under his administration.

A Symbolic Start to a New Term

Reflecting on his journey, Aiyedatiwa acknowledged the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s role in shaping his political path. “It has been his wish that I succeed him. He said it on our first day of inauguration,” he remarked.

With his second term now underway, Aiyedatiwa has set a clear tone for his administration—one centered on justice, fairness, and second chances.
