Northern leaders are split over the potential re-election of President Bola Tinubu in 2027, with core northerners seeking to unseat him while minority groups express support for his administration.

Findings by Sunday PUNCH indicate that the once-united northern bloc is now divided. While some northern minorities, including the Middle Belt, southern Kaduna residents, and Hausa Christians, back Tinubu, key political and socio-cultural groups in the core North argue that his policies have not favored the region.

The rift is evident in social media exchanges between former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and activist Senator Shehu Sani, who have expressed conflicting views on Tinubu’s governance, particularly on security issues.

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), a prominent northern political and cultural association, has maintained neutrality. Secretary-General Murtala Aliyu emphasized that the ACF does not endorse or oppose candidates but focuses on highlighting key governance issues for voters.

However, the League of Northern Democrats, a coalition of members from the APC, PDP, and NNPP, has vowed to back an alternative candidate in 2027. Spokesperson Ladan Salihu stated that Tinubu’s government has failed to meet expectations, leading to widespread dissatisfaction.

“The government has not met expectations, and we in the North are not convinced he deserves another opportunity,” Salihu said. “Even those who voted for him now regret it. His administration has brought hardship, poverty, and agony.”

The National Coalition of Northern Groups also warned that Tinubu’s re-election chances hinge on economic improvements. Coalition President Jamilu Charanchi asserted that the North, holding the majority of votes, would not support Tinubu if hardship persists.

“If he continues on this path, people will not vote for him,” Charanchi said, urging Nigerians to choose leaders based on competence, integrity, and adherence to the rule of law.

With growing political uncertainty, speculation is rising over a possible northern candidate to challenge Tinubu in 2027.
