The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Wednesday condemned the reported assault on a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State. A student, Precious Goddy, allegedly physically assaulted Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, a lecturer, over a TikTok recording.
In a statement released by NANS Senate President, Babatunde Akinteye, in Ibadan, Oyo State, the association reiterated its commitment to advocating for students’ rights, while also upholding discipline, respect for authority, and adherence to institutional laws. Akinteye emphasized that violence and misconduct have no place in Nigerian academic institutions.
“NANS has always been at the forefront of advocating for students’ rights, academic freedom, and a conducive learning environment,” Akinteye said. “However, we equally uphold discipline, respect for authority, and adherence to the laws governing our institutions. We strongly condemn the incident at UNIZIK, where a student physically assaulted a lecturer over a TikTok video.”
Akinteye further noted that academic institutions are meant to be spaces of mutual respect between students and lecturers. While students have the right to self-expression, including the use of social media platforms like TikTok, he stressed that these rights must be exercised responsibly and respectfully.
“The student’s actions are an embarrassment to the student body and do not reflect the values of Nigerian students,” he stated. “As an association committed to the rights and welfare of students, we make it clear that we do not support any student who disrespects lecturers or engages in activities that tarnish the image of the academic community.”
NANS also called on the UNIZIK management to conduct a thorough, unbiased investigation into the matter. “We urge the university to observe due diligence and ensure that all parties involved are given a fair hearing. If the student is found guilty, appropriate sanctions should be applied in accordance with the institution’s regulations.”
Akinteye also emphasized that the academic environment must remain a place of respect, learning, and professionalism, urging students across the country to channel their grievances through proper channels and avoid any form of misconduct that could damage their future prospects.
“We trust that UNIZIK’s management will handle this issue fairly, ensuring justice is served in a manner that upholds the integrity of our educational institutions,” he added.
