In a season where thousands of Nigerian professionals are seeking better income, flexibility, and global opportunities, Michael Onyemah, a product manager and tech career coach, believes the solution might not be as complex as many think.

“You don’t need to code to earn in dollars,” Onyemah asserts. “What you need is positioning, knowing where your existing skills fit in today’s tech-driven economy.”

For most people, the idea of “breaking into tech” immediately brings to mind long hours learning programming languages or enrolling in expensive bootcamps. But Onyemah says that’s no longer the only route.

“There’s a growing demand for non-technical professionals in tech, roles like product management, customer success, growth, and operations,” he says. “Product management, especially, is one of the fastest and most accessible ways in.”

He notes that remote product managers now earn between $2,000 to $5,000 monthly, even from Nigeria, working with companies in the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East.

Onyemah, who runs Ecanset, a coaching platform that helps mid-career professionals transition into tech, says many of his clients came from industries like banking, law, marketing, education, and HR.

“They were frustrated, overworked, underpaid, and unsure of how to transition into tech. But once they understood how to reframe their skills for tech roles, their confidence and their careers changed dramatically.”

His program combines personalised coaching with internship opportunities, job placement support, and a practical learning model. “It’s not about theory. We help you build real experience that hiring managers actually care about.”

The global tech ecosystem is increasingly turning to Africa for remote talent. According to recent reports from tech job boards, African professionals are being hired at record rates due to strong English proficiency, time zone alignment, and competitive pricing.
“Nigerians are sharp, hardworking, and resilient,” Onyemah says. “We just need access and guidance. That’s what I’ve committed myself to.”

He believes that if more professionals knew what was possible and had a mentor to walk the path with them thousands more could unlock remote tech careers.

When asked what advice he’d give to someone without a tech background, Onyemah’s answer is clear:
“Start with what you already know. Your experience is valid. The key is learning how to translate it for tech roles, especially in product management. Once you do that, remote roles become very real.”
