Lagos State has reported a staggering loss of N19 billion in properties due to various fire incidents over the past year. The state’s Commissioner for Special Duties, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed this alarming figure during a recent press briefing.

Oke-Osanyintolu highlighted that the majority of these fires were linked to electrical faults, improper storage of flammable materials, and negligence. He emphasized the need for increased public awareness about fire safety measures to prevent future incidents.

The commissioner also revealed that the Lagos State Fire Service responded to over 1,000 fire emergencies in the last year, showcasing the urgent need for improved infrastructure and resources to combat such disasters effectively.

In light of these incidents, the state government plans to enhance its fire prevention strategies, including conducting regular safety inspections and promoting community awareness programs. Oke-Osanyintolu urged residents to prioritize safety by ensuring their homes and businesses adhere to fire safety regulations.

The significant economic impact of these fires underscores the importance of proactive measures to protect lives and property in Lagos. As the state continues to grow, addressing fire safety will be crucial in safeguarding its residents and their investments.
