The Federal Government has boosted access to water for Nigerians by completing 565 water projects in the last two years. Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, announced this achievement, emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving water resources and sanitation nationwide.
Landmark Achievements in Water Supply
Prof. Utsev explained that these projects align with the Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which aims for universal access to safe water and sanitation. They also support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on agriculture and food security.
The completed projects include 565 water supply schemes, three multipurpose dams, four major irrigation projects, and several sanitation facilities. These initiatives provide clean and accessible water to communities, support agricultural activities, and enhance overall sanitation standards.
The government inaugurated the Rafin Yashin Dam in Niger State, the Odo-Ape Hydropower Dam in Kogi, and the Amla Dam in Benue. These dams will support irrigation, boost electricity generation, and promote agro-industrial development. The concession of the 40MW Kashimbila Hydropower Plant in Taraba and the Agro-Allied Cargo Airport generated over ₦7.1 billion in revenue for the first five years.
Additionally, the government completed four major water projects in Jigawa, Yobe, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Three more projects in Gombe and Yobe are nearly finished. The Minister also reported that two micro-irrigation projects in Oyo and Jigawa have supported smallholder farmers.
Partnerships and Future Plans
Prof. Utsev noted that collaboration with states and partners made these projects possible. The 565 water supply schemes constructed under various programs now serve over 450,000 people.
Looking ahead, the ministry plans to finish 11 new projects in 2025 and launch school and public sanitation initiatives. They will also develop a National Framework for Flood Insurance. Prof. Utsev emphasized the government’s commitment to revitalizing River Basin Development Authorities (RBDAs) by partnering with the private sector and state governments. The ministry has begun the Sustainable Power and Irrigation in Nigeria (SPIN) Project in 20 states to modernize infrastructure and explore hydropower generation.
The Minister thanked President Bola Tinubu, development partners, state governments, and the media for their support. He reiterated the ministry’s commitment to delivering on its mandate. These efforts aim to significantly improve water access, sanitation, and agricultural productivity across Nigeria.
