Charles Odii has continued to play a central role in strengthening Nigeria’s small business ecosystem. As the Director-General and CEO of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), he has introduced initiatives aimed at supporting entrepreneurs, improving access to finance, and expanding opportunities for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Through several strategic programs and partnerships, Charles Odii has positioned SMEDAN as a key driver of economic empowerment and job creation across the country.

Expanding Business Formalisation and Registration

One of the major initiatives championed by Charles Odii is the push to formalise more small businesses in Nigeria. Under his leadership, SMEDAN launched a nationwide effort to register hundreds of thousands of enterprises and integrate them into the formal economy.

The agency is targeting the registration of over 250,000 new businesses, with plans to expand the number to one million MSMEs nationwide as part of a broader economic strategy.

According to Odii, business formalisation helps entrepreneurs access funding, government support programs, and larger market opportunities.

Free Business Registration for Entrepreneurs

Another major development under Charles Odii’s leadership is a partnership between SMEDAN and the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). The collaboration introduced free business registration for 250,000 nano and small enterprises across Nigeria.

The initiative aims to reduce barriers for entrepreneurs who want to register their businesses but often struggle with registration costs and administrative processes.

By simplifying the process, SMEDAN hopes to encourage more entrepreneurs to operate legally and grow their businesses sustainably.

Expanding Access to Funding for SMEs

Access to finance remains a major challenge for small businesses in Nigeria. To address this, Charles Odii revealed that SMEDAN has mobilised over ₦11 billion in financing support for small businesses through partnerships with financial institutions and development partners.

These funds support entrepreneurs with loans, grants, and business development programs aimed at increasing productivity and job creation.

Odii noted that these initiatives have already helped create over 100,000 jobs nationwide, demonstrating the impact of targeted support for MSMEs.

A New Roadmap for MSME Development

Looking ahead, Charles Odii has also unveiled an ambitious roadmap for Nigeria’s MSME sector. The plan focuses on expanding access to affordable financing, strengthening capacity development programs, and introducing a revised national MSME policy framework.

The roadmap also aims to improve entrepreneurship training, business infrastructure, and market access for Nigerian small businesses.

By implementing these policies, SMEDAN hopes to create a stronger ecosystem that allows entrepreneurs to grow and compete globally.

Strengthening Nigeria’s Entrepreneurial Ecosystem

Charles Odii’s leadership reflects a broader vision of empowering entrepreneurs and strengthening grassroots economic development. By focusing on funding access, business formalisation, and entrepreneurship training, SMEDAN continues to support millions of Nigerian business owners.

As these initiatives expand, many observers believe the agency will play an even greater role in promoting job creation. Also in innovation, and sustainable economic growth in Nigeria.
