Kaduna State University ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike Over Welfare Issues
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University (KASU) branch, has commenced an indefinite strike, effective February 18, 2025, over unresolved welfare concerns.
The announcement was made in a statement signed by the branch chairman, Dr. Peter Adamu, and secretary, Dr. Peter Waziri, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Kaduna on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the strike was approved by the ASUU National Executive Council following the request of the KASU branch congress.
“The Academic Staff Union of Universities, KASU branch, wishes to notify the public that its National Executive Council has approved the request of the congress of the branch to proceed on a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike with effect from today, Feb. 18, 2025,” the statement read.
The union rejected the Kaduna State Government’s promises, citing a lack of concrete action, clear details, and specific timelines for the payment of outstanding entitlements owed to members.
Among the unresolved issues highlighted by ASUU-KASU are:
- Non-payment of withheld salaries, including 60% from September 2017 and full salaries from May to September 2022.
- Non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances since 2016.
- Unpaid promotion arrears and supervision allowances for the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme.
- Lack of Group Life Assurance benefits and other entitlements for deceased members.
- Non-remittance of pension contributions from 2009 to 2019.
- Failure to implement the approved 25% and 35% wage awards.
- Demand for the restoration of the university’s autonomy.
The union stated that until these demands are met, the strike will continue indefinitely.
