The National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) has launched an ambitious 10-year strategic plan (2025-2035) to revolutionize Nigeria’s agricultural sector. A core component of this plan involves optimizing 5 million hectares of land within the next five years. This initiative aims to boost food security, enhance agricultural productivity, and attract much-needed private sector investment.

A Decade-Long Vision for Agricultural Transformation

NALDA’s 10-year plan provides a framework for sustainable land development. It focuses on key areas such as land preparation, irrigation, and the development of essential farm infrastructure. This infrastructure includes hostels for farmers and security installations to ensure the safety and productivity of farming clusters. The plan reflects the government’s commitment to achieving food security and reducing reliance on imports through large-scale farmland development.

Cornelius Adebayo, NALDA’s Executive Secretary, emphasized that structured land development goes beyond simply clearing land. It involves a comprehensive approach that maximizes the potential of the land for agricultural purposes. Proper land preparation, efficient irrigation systems, and adequate infrastructure are crucial for achieving optimal yields.

Strategic Partnerships for Success

NALDA recognizes that collaboration is essential for achieving its ambitious goals. To enhance security within farming clusters, NALDA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Police Trust Fund. This partnership will provide security installations to protect farmers and their investments.

Furthermore, NALDA is actively engaging with state governments, local communities, and private sector stakeholders to ensure that its projects are tailored to the specific needs of each region. This collaborative approach will help create a sustainable and inclusive agricultural sector that benefits all Nigerians. The agency is also working with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation to develop 150,000 hectares of farmland to support internally displaced persons (IDPs) nationwide, grouping them into cooperatives and providing them with the necessary inputs and support.

By optimizing 5 million hectares of land in the next five years, NALDA is taking a significant step towards transforming Nigeria’s agricultural sector and ensuring food security for all its citizens.
