The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has summoned MultiChoice Nigeria over its planned subscription price increase, set to take effect on March 1, 2025.

In a statement released by Ondaje Ijagwu, FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, the commission raised concerns about recurrent price hikes in Nigeria’s pay-TV industry, warning against possible anti-competitive practices and market exploitation.

According to the statement, MultiChoice’s chief executive officer has been invited for an investigative hearing on February 27, 2025, at the FCCPC headquarters.

“The FCCPC remains committed to ensuring that businesses operate fairly and in line with Nigeria’s consumer protection laws.

“If MultiChoice fails to provide a satisfactory justification for its pricing strategy or is found in violation of fair competition principles, the commission will take necessary enforcement actions, including sanctions and corrective measures,” the statement read.

The commission also confirmed that it is working closely with the sector regulator and other relevant agencies to promote fair competition in Nigeria’s broadcasting and digital subscription industry.

With increasing public frustration over frequent price increases in pay-TV services, the FCCPC reassured Nigerian consumers that it will continue to push for transparency, accountability, and fair market practices in the sector.

DStv, GOtv Offer Subscribers Plans to Alleviate Price Increase

Meanwhile, MultiChoice Nigeria has announced a support package for DStv and GOtv subscribers to cushion the effect of the tariff adjustment. The company had earlier informed subscribers that new rates would apply to DStv and GOtv packages starting March 1.

To mitigate the impact, MultiChoice has introduced an incentive allowing subscribers who renew their subscriptions before expiration to continue paying the old rates for a specified period.

Additionally, the company is offering extra benefits through its “Step Up” promotion, which allows both active and disconnected DStv and GOtv subscribers to access premium content beyond their current package. This offer runs until March 31, 2025, and enables customers to receive an automatic upgrade to a higher package upon payment for a package above their current subscription.

As part of its relief measures, MultiChoice will also announce a price reduction for its streaming service, Showmax, on February 28, aiming to provide customers with more affordable access to live sports, movies, and general entertainment.
